How It Works

Make Give Live run community based knitting groups around New Zealand. Our groups meet either every week, or every other week, usually in a cafe, a community hub or a library. Every group has a Group Leader, who hosts the group and makes sure everyone is happy and has knitting to keep them busy. There is no cost involved in joining one of our groups at all, we just want you to come along and knit or crochet and enjoy being part of our family of makers.

As a Social Enterprise, we knit hats that we sell. These hats are part of a collection that we have designed and so are knitted in specific yarns to specific patterns, that we sell online and for some stores. For every hat that we sell we donate another one to someone in need in New Zealand. These hats can be made to any pattern at all and are a great opportunity to experiment and have fun.

We provide all of the materials to make both types of hats and if you don’t have knitting needles or crochet hooks, we can help you with that too. Our groups are all about community, we keep them small, no more than 10 people, so that the participants can enjoy each others company and really get to know one another.

Being part of a Make Give Live group is like having a second family, we knit but we also nurture our own mental health and wellbeing. Looking after yourself is essential and it is a proven fact that knitting has a multitude of therapeutic benefits, including reducing stress, improving self confidence and helping provide meaningful connections and purpose, especially when you are part of a community.

We currently have groups running in the following locations:

Auckland: Birkenhead, Browns Bay, Mt Eden, Riverhead, Whanagaparaoa, Howick
